Marcos Chaves (b.1961, Brazil)

Marcos Chaves was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1961 and began his artistic endeavours in the early 1980’s. By using appropriation and intervention parameters, the artist works in diverse media, openly moving between the production of objects, photographs, videos, drawings, words and sounds. 

Chaves has shown his artwork at Manifesta7 - The European Biennial of Contemporary Art, Bolzano, Italy, 25th São Paulo International Biennial, Brazil; 1st and 5th Mercosul Biennial, Porto Alegre, Brazil; 4th Havana Biennial, Cuba; 3rd Lulea Art Biennial, Sweden. 

His work has also been presented in individual and collective exhibitions in Brazil and other countries, in institutions and galleries, such as the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan; Martin-Gropius-Bau, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (NBK) and Ludwig Museum, Germany; Vaanta Art Museum, Finland; Fri-Art - Centre d’Art Contemporain in Freiburg, Switzerland; Espace Topographie del Art, Paris, France; Butcher’s Project, g39 and Northern Gallery, UK; Iziko South African National Art Gallery, South Africa; Centro per l’Arte Contemporânea Luigi Pecci, Prato, Italy; MIS and Galeria Nara Roesler, Sao Paulo, Brazil; Galeria Blanca Soto Arte, Madrid, Spain; Galeria Laura Marsiaj, Progetti and Galeria Artur Fidalgo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
