about this work
Before My Birth developed a completely diverse approach to clay: it no longer had mythological connotations like in all the previous works, but became the framework for a system of minimal resources where self-imposed highly restricting rules stimulated a renewed artistic performance. Before My Birth intended thus to achieve “the infinite emotional effect”, which was defined as the true recovery of the energy surrounding the sculptures. That energy is the sum of the humans who build them: the artist and his team. What the artist experienced and saw in day-to-day life along with his team while constructing his project for the New Museum Triennial (A Person Loved Me) was the sole—and unique—model to shape the designs for this one. Therefore, while all the previous works had staged a progressive detachment from human culture, Before My Birth can be read as a return to earthly concerns. (Adrian Villar Rojas)

From the Arts Brookfield press release:
On view through March 29, the World Financial Center Plaza sculpture, entitled Before my birth, relates to the artist’s Triennial project, A person loved me (2012), a site specific sculpture for the fourth floor of the New Museum.
Obscuring the relationship between indoor and outdoor, intimate and monumental, Before my birth examines working processes in the construction of site-specific and public art. A reconstitution of the process of the production of A person loved me, this public work incorporates elements of this sculpture, translated into a new landscape.
"Adrián Villar Rojas's work imagines the world through the eyes of the inhabitants of different worlds, and this new sculpture promises to offer a breathtaking new perspective on the World Financial Center Plaza," said Debra Simon, artistic director of Arts Brookfield.
