about this work
Iran do Espírito Santo continues his mediation on perception and materials with the work titled “Platform 1.” This conceptual and ironic sculptural work comes from his series of visual perplexities. The platform appears to be a ‘readymade’ that is culled from an industrial warehouse, however, the subtle use of granite and secluded placement of the object deviates the viewers’ preconceptions. Espírito Santo manipulates an open-ended inquisition of everyday interactions. A structure that appears to have function becomes void of all familiarity. He is interested in appropriating structure, material, design, and surface to encourage speculation of sensibility. Whether in sculpture, drawing or mural painting, Iran do Espírito Santo works constantly with codes of representation. In his sculptures of table lamps or shoeboxes, the artist transforms common objects into ideal models, evoking the pure geometric form through his absolute mastery of technique and grasp of the potential of each material. Other pieces dialogue with architecture by means of direct intervention on the walls, through the proportion of the object scales and the surrounding space, or through altering the perception of the space itself.
