about this work
"In this work, I have been able to connect my two interests – in antique and old objects picked up from various trips to the flea markets as well as my continuing examination of sound. Using found objects like an ancient coffee grinder, pillars from an old house, knobs from a lorry, and a lorry’s air filter – each with a role in the workings of the box. The sound comes from two sources – one is mechanically created when keys are wound and music is produced from the elements of musical movements reminiscent of old music boxes and the second is the physical turning of the handle of the coffee grinder that turns a central cylinder covered with ghungroos (metallic bells strung together and usually worn by Indian classical dancers for a performance). Another material I have been using in my works because of its historical relevance is the black mirror, previously used by magicians and hypnotists but forgotten by history."
